Summer Mentorships 2026: Bridging the Gap – My Mid-Term Reflection as an Open Mainframe Project MOE Mentee

As an undergraduate navigating the vast world of enterprise technology, diving headfirst into mainframe computing can feel like stepping onto an entirely different planet. That is why I was thrilled to join the Open Mainframe Project (OMP) as part of the Mainframe Open Education (MOE) mentorship program.

Our core mission this term is Education-as-Communication, acting as a relatable voice for students and early-career professionals, breaking down complex mainframe concepts into engaging, digestible, and accessible content.

As we reach the halfway point of the mentorship, it is time to look back at the journey so far, celebrate what we have built, and look ahead to the exciting milestones yet to come.

The Journey So Far: Building “Mainframe 101”

When I started this mentorship, my goal was to look past the intimidating terminology and document my own learning curve, transforming technical workflows into clear learning paths. Thanks to the support of the MOE community, I have exceeded my initial content goals, publishing 6 comprehensive articles alongside corresponding social advocacy pieces on LinkedIn:

Beyond writing, I wanted to build practical tools that solve real student friction points. That inspired the creation of jclcheck.xyz, a utility designed to help learners interact with Job Control Language more intuitively.

What’s Next: The Road Ahead

While the first half of the mentorship focused heavily on drafting foundational content and building out initial tools, the remaining weeks will be all about refinement, interactivity, and expansion.

Here is what I am tackling next:

  • Interactive Content Transformation: Taking my published articles and converting them into interactive experiences to enhance active learning.
  • GitBook Integration: Centralizing these resources onto GitBook to make them easily referenceable and structured for future students.
  • Collaborative Website Development: Teaming up with my co-mentee, Tushar, to finish building and polishing our dedicated interactive learning platform.
  • End-of-Year Reflection: Wrapping up the mentorship with a final review blog detailing key learnings, community insights, and advice for prospective student contributors.

Conclusion

Participating in the Open Mainframe Project has been an incredible catalyst for my growth. Seeing students and peers engage with these articles reinforces why peer-to-peer education matters, it bridges the gap between legacy reliability and the next generation of enterprise developers.
