Open Mainframe Project wins big in Las Vegas

By November 1, 2024November 19th, 2024No Comments

In October, the Open Mainframe Project community gathered in Las Vegas for IBM TechXchange. This year, more than 5,000 attendees embarked on over 40,000 hours of learning at the conference. In fact, our ambassadors and project leads came together to present content as part of Community Day on Monday, October 21. In total,  1,056 attendees across 19 unique sessions. If you missed it, check out some of our highlights.

Redefining developer experience on the Mainframe with AI and Community – Meredith Stowell, Vice President, Ecosystem at IBM

Mainframes, while historically known for their security and reliability, are evolving rapidly with the integration of modern tools, DevOps practices, AI technologies, and advanced security frameworks. By leveraging tools like Zowe, Galasa and COBOL Check, along with AI-powered solutions, enterprises can future-proof their mainframe environments while maintaining the security and performance they’ve come to rely on.
In this keynote, Meredith Stowell, member of the Open Mainframe Project Governing Board, will unveil a few new projects under the Open Mainframe Project umbrella that advance developer experience on the mainframe including Zorse and zopen community!
Zorse is a new open source project that will provide the resources to train and evaluate large language models (LLMs) for mainframe programming languages. Zorse will collect large, production-quality datasets to improve LLM’s ability to understand and write mainframe code. It will also provide an evaluation tool to measure the performance of LLMs on mainframe programming tasks. Ultimately, this will help build Artificial Intelligence (AI) coding tools that will boost the productivity of mainframe software engineers. Learn more about Zorse here. Newly contributed to the Open Mainframe Project, the zopen community is a global community dedicated to making a modern collection of popular open source tools available for z/OS. They aim to make the platform more accessible to modern developers and organizations embracing open source technology. With more than 200 projects and a thriving ecosystem, it will shape the future of z/OS UNIX development.

The zopen community accelerates modernization efforts on the mainframe, making it easier for companies to adapt z/OS to the latest development standards, especially with the growing adoption of DevOps and CI/CD pipelines. This community also helps reduce the learning curve and complexity of z/OS environments by providing ready-to-use, familiar open source tools, improving developer productivity and enabling faster deployments.
