Over the years, I found my passion for infusing the latest technology trends, and industry best practices into traditional mainframe environments. Getting to this point in my career has been a long journey with twist and turns and some bumps, but I wouldn’t have been able to make it without all the wonderful people I have encountered along the way. I feel very grateful that at IBM I met people who saw potential in me and helped guide me.
In the nine years that I been with IBM, I met people who inspired me, mentored me, advocated for me, and sponsored me. My parents taught me to work hard for what I want, but I also learned that besides hard work, you also need people by your side to help guide and encourage you.
Why am I telling you this?
Hispanic Heritage Month takes place from September 15 through October 15, 2024 . This is a month where the history, culture, and the contributions of Hispanics and Latinos are celebrated. During this month, I particularly like to reflect on my journey and celebrate all the milestones I have achieved personally and professionally.
As a Hispanic woman, I find the success stories of other Hispanics like me inspirational and encouraging. I understand the hard work and determination it requires, and the difference having mentors and sponsors can make in someone’s career. This has helped shape my belief that no matter what point in your career you find yourself in, there is something you can do to help another person in their journey. This is why during this month; I enjoy giving back to the community. More specifically, I spend it mentoring and talking to students about what a career in technology looks like.
I would like to encourage everyone to consider helping others in their journey whether is through mentoring, sponsoring, participating in a career panel, or hosting a Raspberry Pi or Scratch workshop, or any other activity you may find joy in. These actives might sound trivial or redundant, but it can make a big impact in someone’s life, as was the case for me.
Any of these activities can be done any time during the year, but Hispanic Heritage Month is a great time to get started!
