The good, the bad and the Feilong

By | April 9, 2025

2024 was a year of good and bad for Open Mainframe Project’s Feilong project.  Let’s start with the bad, the good things that happened in 2024 and what will continue in 2025.

Unfortunately, the project lost a portion of the key contributors to the project. One effect is that the number of commits have dropped significantly since late August 2024. The project also had to change the github project maintainers. But with bad news comes opportunities.

Members of the project mentored a university student that focused to improve Feilong Packaging Process.  Many thanks go out to the mentee, Aazam Thakur, for doing a great job during his summer break from university.  A thank you also to our mentors, Open Mainframe Project ambassador Dong Ma as well as SUSE’s Eric Bischoff and Mike Friesenegger.  The project included validating Linux distro build procedures, updating the documentation and an initial implementation of an automated distro package build process. The final review of the project provides a great overview of all that was accomplished.

The Feilong community has started to make changes that will improve the project including agreeing to:

  • Create a kanban board to organize future Feilong work efforts.
  • Automate the publication of the project documentation.
  • Review and cleanup issues and bugs.
  • Build a Feilong project repo that pulled the Linux distro build code under the Open Mainframe Project github.
  • Enlist the 2024 mentee and mentors to finalize the implementation of the automated distro package build process so Linux packages will be available to install from the Open Build Service.
