Open Mainframe Project is hosting its very first Virtual Hackathon for Zowe. From Feb. 23-April 5, participants from all backgrounds – students, developers, engineers, makers – are welcome to join the event. Any new or existing team (consisting of 2-8 participants) can register and submit their current project, or try something new.
The only condition is for the open source project to be Zowe related such as:
- An enhancement or addition to the Zowe ecosystem, perhaps a feature you might have been missing in it.
- A project to build something of your own on top of Zowe, or leveraging Zowe.
- If you have a product of your own, it could be an enhancement to make it compatible with Zowe, or Zowe extension for your product.
A good example of a project is the Zowe Mobile App that initially started as a hackathon project within Open Mainframe Project member Broadcom, which has hosted several internal Zowe events in the past. The Zowe Mobile App has recently been accepted as a part of the Zowe project. You can read more about the app and how it was created in this article.

After April 5, the Open Mainframe Project will host a webinar where each team will have a short slot to present their project in front of a panel of judges to review. Leading solutions will be announced via virtual meetup, blog and will be invited to Open Mainframe Summit, which takes place on September 16-17 in NYC, at no cost.
