This year marks a huge milestone… the 10th anniversary of the Open Mainframe Project!!
Open Mainframe Project was first announced on August 17, 2015 at LinuxCon/CloudOpen/ContainerCon. Over the past decade, this project, hosted under The Linux Foundation—has championed the deployment of Linux and open source software on mainframe systems, fostering an inclusive, innovative ecosystem for technical collaboration and growth.
A Journey of Growth and Impact
- From ambitious beginnings to thriving community: Originally launched with IBM and 16 founding members, the Open Mainframe Project has expanded into a rich ecosystem of more than 21 hosted projects, working groups, ambassadors, and contributors.
- Cultivating learning and engagement: Initiatives like the Mentorship Program have empowered more than 100 developers and students to join the community, gain hands-on experience, and contribute meaningfully.
- Driving innovation and accessibility: Projects such as Zowe—the first open source platform on z/OS—and the COBOL Programming Course, Mainframe Open Education, Galasa, and more reflect the project’s commitment to expanding the boundaries of mainframe technology.
