As I sit down to write this blog, I’m filled with a mix of emotions—pride, nostalgia, and a deep sense of accomplishment. The journey of creating the video series Mainframe Voices has been nothing short of transformative. The idea behind this project was simple yet profound: to bring together a diverse range of perspectives on mainframe technology and modernisation from some
of the industry’s most respected voices. Through these conversations, we aimed to highlight the enduring relevance of mainframes and explore their evolving role in today’s technology landscape.
This journey would not have been possible without the unwavering support and guidance of my mentor, Misty Decker. Throughout the series, Misty has been a pillar of strength, offering invaluable advice, encouragement, and her own insights into the world of mainframes. Her dedication to helping others understand the importance of this technology has been truly inspiring, and I am incredibly grateful for her mentorship.
I also want to extend a special thank you to Donna Hudi, who played a crucial role in this journey. From helping me craft the perfect emails to reach out to our expert guests to providing final feedback on each video, Donna’s contributions were invaluable.

The Goal of “Mainframe Voices”
When I embarked on this journey, my goal was to create a video series where experts could share their insights and experiences with mainframe technology. I wanted to showcase the importance of mainframes, not just as relics of the past but as powerful tools that continue to drive critical business operations across the globe. I also hoped to demystify mainframe technology for a broader audience, including young developers and IT professionals who might not be familiar with this cornerstone of enterprise computing.

Key Learnings and Insights
Over the course of the series, I had the privilege of speaking with a variety of experts who shared their unique perspectives on different aspects of mainframe technology. Here are some of the key topics we explored and the invaluable insights I gained:
Mainframe Modernisation and Its Impact
One of the central themes of our series was the ongoing modernisation of mainframes. Through discussions with industry veterans, I learned about the various strategies companies are employing to update their mainframe
environments. This includes integrating new technologies like cloud computing and AI, which are not only enhancing mainframe capabilities but also ensuring their relevance in the future.
The Role of AI and Machine Learning
With the rise of AI and machine learning, I was curious to understand how these technologies could be integrated into mainframe environments. Our experts provided fascinating insights into how AI can enhance mainframe operations, from predictive maintenance to automated workload management. It became clear that the synergy between AI and mainframes is poised to unlock new levels of efficiency and innovation.
Cloud Integration
We delved into the topic of cloud integration and its impact on mainframe environments. Despite being perceived as an ‘old’ technology, mainframes are
evolving to work seamlessly with cloud platforms, enabling businesses to leverage the benefits of both. The integration of mainframes with cloud services is proving to be a game-changer, offering flexibility, scalability, and cost-efficiency while maintaining the robustness of traditional mainframe systems.
DevOps and Mainframe Modernisation
Another significant area of focus was the application of DevOps principles within mainframe environments. As we explored this topic, I learned about the challenges and benefits of adopting DevOps in a mainframe context. By fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement, DevOps is helping organisations streamline mainframe development processes, reduce time-to-market, and maintain high-security standards.
Data Democratisation
Data democratisation emerged as a crucial theme, highlighting how making data more accessible across an organisation can drive better decision-making and innovation. Through engaging conversations, I learned about the challenges and opportunities of opening up mainframe data to non-technical users and how intuitive user interfaces and visualisation tools can empower them to leverage this data effectively.
Cultural and Organisational Changes
Modernizing mainframes is not just a technical endeavour; it also requires significant cultural and organisational changes. Our discussions emphasized the importance of fostering a culture that embraces change and encourages continuous learning. This is especially important when introducing new technologies and methodologies like DevOps and cloud integration. The role of leadership in driving these changes was highlighted as critical for the successful modernisation of mainframe environments.
The Importance of Community and Collaboration
A recurring theme in our discussions was the importance of community and collaboration in driving innovation within the mainframe ecosystem. Whether through open-source projects like Zowe or community-driven initiatives by the Open Mainframe Project, it became evident that collaboration is key to the continued evolution and relevance of mainframes.
Personal Reflections and Unforgettable Moments
On a more personal note, I also had the opportunity to hear some heartwarming and humorous stories from our guests. From the giant man introduction with Donna to the father-son duo who both studied from Interskill Learning, these moments added a personal touch to the series and reminded me of the human side of technology.

Through Mainframe Voices, I’ve not only gained a deeper understanding of mainframe technology but also grown personally and professionally. The process of reaching out to experts, conducting interviews, and distilling complex information into accessible content has taught me invaluable lessons in communication, perseverance, and the power of storytelling. One of the most important lessons I learned is that technology is as much about people as it is about innovation. The stories, experiences, and passion of those who work with mainframes have truly shaped my perspective on this field.
