Creating a Thriving Multi-Generational Workforce (August 2023)

By | June 20, 2024

At SHARE New Orleans in August 2023, Dr. Gloria Chance, CEO and Founder of The Mousai Group, moderated a panel discussion on bridging the generational divide within the mainframe industry. The event, sponsored by Broadcom Mainframe Software, IBM, the Open Mainframe Project, Rocket Software, Tech Channel, Virtual Z Computing, and BMC, brought together a diverse group of panelists, including Len Santalucia (Vicom Infinity, A Converge Company), Stephanie Nwankwo (Broadcom), Earl Dixon (Broadcom), Laticia C. (IBM), John Thompson (MCEC), Cynthia Overby (Rocket Software), Rebecca Parchman (BMC Software), and Megan Rupert (Broadcom Mainframe Software).

The discussion began by acknowledging the age gap in the industry and the unique realities of multigenerational workplaces. Panelists explored the experiences of being at different career stages – whether younger, mid-career, or older- as workforce demographics shift. They examined the specific challenges and opportunities that exist within this dynamic, emphasizing the importance of fostering environments where all generations can thrive.

A key theme was the critical role of communication and soft skills in navigating multigenerational workplaces. The panel highlighted the need for effective communication and the ability to bridge generational language barriers. Mental health and well-being were also prominent topics, with a focus on addressing mental health openly and creating supportive, stigma-free environments.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) emerged as essential components for fostering innovation and inclusivity. The panelists stressed the importance of ongoing DEI efforts and adapting to diverse perspectives within the workforce. They also discussed the evolving expectations of younger generations, particularly their prioritization of work-life balance and experiences over traditional career paths.

Continuous learning and adaptability were underscored as vital for staying relevant in the ever-evolving mainframe industry. The panel concluded that by promoting open communication, supporting mental health, embracing diversity, and encouraging lifelong learning, organizations can create a harmonious and productive multigenerational workplace. This approach not only benefits individual employees but also strengthens the overall organization, making it more resilient and innovative in the face of changing industry landscapes.
