The Open Mainframe Project (OMP) launched Zowe a little more than a year ago. The Zowe framework, which provides interoperability and uses the latest web technologies among products and solutions from multiple vendors, has helped enable developers to use familiar, industry-standard, open source tools to access mainframe resources and services.

The mainframe community responded well to Zowe – developers immediately downloaded the beta, became active contributors and logged in to the project’s communication channels to learn more and ask questions. To date, the Zowe website has over 700,000 pageviews and 4,600 downloads in the first year.
Now, OMP is taking our commitment to open source on the mainframe one step further and recently launched the Zowe Conformance Program. This program helps companies deliver offerings that align with the Zowe framework. Vendors follow the Testing Guidelines to ensure their offering is aligned with the conformance standards developed by the Zowe community. This ensures they can incorporate it with new and existing products that will enable integration of mainframe applications and data across the enterprise. Then users know that their software will follow established guidelines and will work with each solution.

“The Zowe Conformance Program aims to give users the confidence that when they use a product, app, or distribution that leverages Zowe they can expect a high level of common functionality, interoperability and user experience.
Conformance provides Independent Software Vendors (ISVs), System Integrators (SIs) and end users greater confidence that their software will behave as expected.”
Products achieving conformance will have exclusive logos and marks they can use in the promotion of their product, as well as be listed in the Zowe Conformance Directory. Vendors that have offerings that were a part of the initial launch include Broadcom, IBM, Phoenix Software, and Rocket Software.
