Happy 10th Birthday – Open Mainframe Project!

By | December 19, 2025

This year, the Open Mainframe Project officially celebrated our 10 years birthday! What began as an ambitious idea has grown into a global open source community that brings together developers, enterprises, vendors, educators, and students to collaborate on the future of the mainframe.

Over the past decade, the Open Mainframe Project has helped modernize how people build, learn, and innovate on mainframe systems. From launching and growing cornerstone projects like Zowe, to opening doors for new developers through education and workforce initiatives, the project has proven that open source and mainframes are not only compatible—they’re better together. Along the way, the community has embraced modern tools, new ideas, and fresh perspectives while continuing to support the mission-critical workloads that power the world’s largest organizations.

Turning 10 is ultimately about the people. It’s about the maintainers who keep projects moving forward, the contributors who share their expertise, and the member companies that invest in open collaboration year after year. As such, we brought were able to celebrate this milestone with the community at several in-person events including SHARE Cleveland, IBM TechXchange and GS UK.

You can watch all the the individual birthday videos here.

Thanks to this community, the Open Mainframe Project enters its second decade with momentum, confidence, and plenty of ideas for what comes next.

Here’s to ten years of open source on the mainframe—and to the many milestones, innovations, and new contributors still to come 🥳
