Summer 2024: Mainframe Voices (Part 3)

Written by Rahat Khan, Student at Starex University

The Goal of “Mainframe Voices”

When I embarked on this journey, my goal was to create a video series where experts could share their insights and experiences with mainframe technology. I wanted to showcase the importance of mainframes, not just as relics of the past but as powerful tools that continue to drive critical business operations across the globe. I also hoped to demystify mainframe technology for a broader audience, including young developers and IT professionals who might not be familiar with this cornerstone of enterprise computing.

Mainframe Voices” was created as part of my Open Mainframe Project Mentorship Program. As a 2024 summer mentee, my mentors include Misty Decker, Mainframe Modernization Consult Leader at Kyndryl and Bruno Azenha, FSI Global Solution Architect at Red Hat.

My final blog and video presentation can be found here.

Here are the next three videos:

Hybrid Cloud Mainframes: In this episode of Mainframe Voices, we turn our attention to hybrid cloud and hybrid cloud strategies. As businesses navigate the complexities of modern IT infrastructure, hybrid cloud solutions have emerged as a powerful approach to combining the strengths of on-premises mainframes with the flexibility and scalability of cloud environments. Our experts will discuss how hybrid cloud strategies are enabling organisations to optimise performance, manage costs, and maintain control over critical data while embracing the advantages of cloud computing. Join us as we explore the transformative impact of hybrid cloud on the future of mainframe technology.

In this episode we have a conversation with experts:

  • Elizabeth (Krumbach) Joseph – IBM
  • Jakub Balhar – Broadcom Inc.
  • Louisa Seers – IBM
  • Marcus Davage – BMC Software
  • Rosalind Radcliffe – IBM
  • Sarah Julia Kriesch – Accenture DACH
  • Dr. Vinu Russell N. Viswasadhas – Kyndryl

Data Democratization in Mainframes: In this episode of Mainframe Voices, we discuss the concept of data democratization and its potential to unlock the vast amounts of data stored on mainframes. Traditionally, access to this data has been limited, often requiring lengthy processes to obtain valuable insights. By democratizing data, companies can empower employees at all levels to access and utilize information directly, leading to more informed decisions and greater agility. We’ll explore how this shift can transform business operations, using real-world scenarios like a retail company enabling store managers to directly access sales data. Our experts will discuss the benefits of data democratization and how it can drive innovation and efficiency across organizations.

In this episode we have a conversation with experts:

  • Bruno Azenha – Red Hat
  • Craig Mullins – Elnion
  • Jakub Balhar – Broadcom Inc.
  • Jessielaine Punongbayan – Dynatrace
  • Marcus Davage – BMC Software
  • Rosalind Radcliffe – IBM
  • Sarah Julia Kriesch – Accenture DACH
  • Dr. Vinu Russell N. Viswasadhas – Kyndryl

User Interfaces for Non-Technical Users to access data:  In this episode of Mainframe Voices, we explore how user interfaces and data visualisation tools can be designed to empower non-technical users in exploring and analysing mainframe data. Data democratisation aims to make critical information accessible to everyone in an organisation, but this requires user-friendly tools that bridge the gap between complex data and everyday users. Our experts will discuss effective design strategies for creating intuitive interfaces and engaging visualisations that enable users without technical backgrounds to interact with and derive insights from mainframe data. Join us as we uncover how thoughtful design can transform data accessibility and empower all team members to make informed decisions.

In this episode we have a conversation with experts:
