SUMMARY:(Webinar) Culture Speaks: How Internal Communication Shapes What We Believe and How We Behave
DESCRIPTION:This experiential session on Wednesday\, October 22 at 9-10 am PST explores how internal communication becomes the heartbeat of organizational culture. More than just words\, the way we lead\, listen\, and message—formally and informally—shapes what people believe is possible\, safe\, and true within an organization. But this won’t be your typical corporate communication workshop. In this session\, we listen with our whole selves. We’ll use music and expressive arts to tune into the rhythms of how we speak\, lead\, and listen. From soundscapes to storytelling\, participants will surface the unspoken energy of their organizational culture—and learn to shift it with intention. \nParticipants will engage in soundscapes\, storytelling\, and creative exercises that invite reflection on how trust\, intentional leadership and transparent communication (these were participants’ insights from the last panel) foster a culture of psychological safety and belonging. Come ready to listen deeply\, create boldly\, and leave with new strategies to communicate with purpose and intention. \nRegister for the webinar here. \nMaking Our Strong Community\, Stronger is a collaborative initiative sponsored by BMC\, Broadcom Mainframe Software\, IBM\, Open Mainframe Project\, Rocket Software and TechChannel. With a goal of accelerating diversity by sharing different voices\, perspectives and corporate cultures\, we hope to inspire meaningful conversations and most importantly\, approachable actions that elevate inclusivity with lasting impact. SUMMARY:LOL or BRB? Decoding Millennial and Gen Z Workplace Communication
DESCRIPTION:Effective communication is the foundation of a thriving workplace. It fosters collaboration\, nurtures innovation\, and ensures that each team member feels valued and heard. Without trust\, even the best communication strategies fall short. \nWhen individuals feel respected and supported\, they are more likely to engage in honest dialogue\, express concerns\, provide constructive feedback\, and take the necessary risks for innovation. This not only enhances team dynamics\, but also boosts employee engagement\, morale\, and organizational performance. \nResearch on trust underscores its critical role in business success. When trust is present among team members and leadership\, individuals are more willing to share ideas\, voice concerns\, acknowledge mistakes\, and seek help without fear of negative consequences. This in turn strengthens honest and effective communication\, creating a workplace culture where contributions are valued and respected. \nJoin the Making the Strong Community Stronger initiative as we embark on an exciting year where we explore the challenges and opportunities of communication in the workplace. \nPlease join us on Wednesday\, May 14 at 9-10 am PT/11 am-12 pm CT/12-1 pm ET for a webinar titled\, “LOL or BRB? Decoding Millennial and Gen Z Workplace Communication\,” where we start the dialog with Gen Z and Millennials to understand communications and trust from their perspective. \nDr. Gloria Chance\, PhD\, founder of The Mousai Group\, moderates the webinar. These Millennial and Gen Z panelists will join her: \n-Brennen Glover\, Manager\, Onboarding & Employee Development\, Rocket Software\, USA \n-Elizabeth Joseph\, global head\, Open Source Program Office for IBM Z and LinuxONE\, Open Mainframe Project \n-Lilly McPadden\, student at Marist University\, and co-op working in the z/OS Customer Test area\, IBM \n-Andy Wig\, senior editor\, TechChannel \nRegister now for this insightful webinar here. \nStay updated with all MSCS activities by joining our LinkedIn group here.

SUMMARY:Open Source Summit North America (Vancouver\, Canada + Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Open Source Summit is the premier event for open source developers\, technologists\, and community leaders to collaborate\, share information\, solve problems\, and gain knowledge\, furthering open source innovation and ensuring a sustainable open source ecosystem. It is the gathering place for open-source code and community contributors. Join us for the Open Source Summit North America\, hosted in Vancouver\, Canada\, and virtually on May 10-12. \nJohn Mertic\, Executive Director for Open Mainframe Project\, and Cynthia Coupe\, Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion Specialist\, co-chairs for SDDI (Software Developer Diversity and Inclusion (SDDI) project will be on-site to give an overview of the project. \nOn Wednesday\, May 10 at 12:05-12:45 pm PDT\, join the session titled “Lean in: Software Developer Diversity and Inclusion Project“ \n“Openness” has always been a core principle in open source. It’s designed to grant everyone with the ability to use\, update and distribute source code for any purpose. Unfortunately\, open doesn’t always mean everyone feels welcome. Like the broader tech industry\, open source has a diversity problem. Though anyone and everyone is welcome to contribute – many under-represented groups like women\, minorities\, parents\, non-technical contributors\, members of the LGBTQ+ and more have shared stories of the challenges they’ve faced in open source communities. The Linux Foundation believes that people of vastly different backgrounds\, nationalities\, orientations\, and identities create stronger communities that produce better outcomes and more robust technologies. Re-launched earlier this year\, the Software Developer Diversity and Inclusion (SDDI) project is dedicated to improving this. The mission of SDDI is to discover\, evaluate\, and promote best practices from research and industry to increase diversity and inclusion in software engineering. In this session\, attendees will learn more about SDDI\, its goals and how to get involved. Add this to your schedule here. \nOn Thursday\, May 11 at 11 -11:40 am PDT\, join the session titled\, “Hidden Differences: How to be Inclusive When you Don’t Know – Cynthia Coupe\, OARS  \nWorkplaces and managers are being asked to be all inclusive for their workers\, but what does this mean? How can you be inclusive if you don’t know there is a difference? Sometimes we have employees who don’t even know they are neurodivergent\, so how do we navigate this in the workplace to be inclusive of all people\, whether or not their differences are hidden\, known or unknown? How can we create an environment where everyone is supported if we don’t even know what who or what we are supporting? \nThis presentation will address these issues and provide some guidance as to how to make an inclusive workplace\, what inclusive attitudes are and why this is important for everyone. Add this to your schedule here. \nOn Thursday\, May 11 at 2:55-3:35 pm PDT\, join the session titled\, “Squashing Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion Bugs in Open Source Projects: How to Find and Resolve Common “DEI Bugs” –  Georg Link\, SDDI member and Direct of Sales at Bitergia \n\nOpen source software projects are hyper-collaborative environments but surveys reveal that project members lack diversity. There are many reasons why open source projects appear uninviting to people of underrepresented groups. We would consider these reasons “bugs” if the system was software. This talk uses the idea of DEI bugs to discuss how we can identify where open source projects fall short in being inviting and inclusive. The goal of this framing is to find ways to squash these bugs and bring out the potential of everyone who has an interest in our open source projects. A concrete suggestion is to walk in the shoes of others and take a fresh look at your project. The audience will learn actionable steps to take a new look at their own open source projects and start making a positive difference. This revised talk adds a discussion of common DEI bugs\, where they come from\, and how we can resolve them. [notes to program committee:] We revised this talk based on feedback that the talk could be improved with more examples and guidance. We walk faster through the steps of identifying DEI bugs and added a discussion of common DEI bugs\, based on peer-reviewed research. Add this to your schedule here.\n\n\nTo register for the conference or learn more about the schedule\, visit the main Open Source Summit North America website here.

SUMMARY:Words Matter: The Language of Diversity\, Understanding\, and Acceptance (Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our next webinar as part of the Making Our Strong Community\, Stronger collaborative initiative for diversity\, equity and inclusion. In this discussion on November 16 at 9-10:15 am PT/ 12-1:15 pm ET\, we take an unflinching look at the role of language in our diversity\, equity and inclusion efforts. We’ll see how fluid language is today and discover the importance of supporting the evolution of vocabulary to drive greater equity\, inclusion and acceptance across our increasingly diverse community. Register here. \nWords have power. They can connect or divide. Create friends or enemies. Without clarity and common ground\, words can foster generational misunderstandings\, inflicting harm and holding us back from societal\, personal or cultural advancement. But words can also build the bedrock for new levels of progress\, appreciation and humanity. If you doubt the power of words\, ask yourself this: have you tip-toed around how to address a person or group of people for fear of “saying the wrong thing” or offending them? \nSpecific language conveys inclusion and “being seen” and can provide confidence in our connections with friends\, family or colleagues. However\, it’s easy for those not impacted by injustice or discrimination to downplay the power of words. Language drives our conscious minds but also embeds itself deeply in our unconscious where it drives how we think\, feel and act—and how we treat each other. \nModerated by Dr. Gloria Chance\, CEO and President of The Mousai Group\, panelists include: \n\nAlysha M. Campbell\, CEO\, CultureShift HR\nMichael Daubman\, Director Product Management\, Broadcom Mainframe Software\nShahed Alqadi\, Project Manager\, BMC Software\nNik Harris\, Director of Strategic Outreach & Engagement\, Human Rights Campaign\nJane Kerzhenetseva\, Delivery Manager & Inclusion Lead\, Rocket Software\n\nOur panelists will openly discuss words\, phrases and concepts that have entered our collective lexicon but are being met with confusion or even hostility by some\, while welcomed and  celebrated by many. Where are the triggers with this new language and how can we move past what is potentially blocking progress or understanding? \nWe are all impacted directly and daily by words around us\, in the media\, entertainment\, songs\, conversations\, books\, social media\, work\, and so on.  Outdated language coddles and amplifies the harm of racism\, sexism\, ageism\, ableism\, religious bigotry\, classism and heterosexism\, yet new\, more inclusive language plays a critical role in the dismantling of these societal structures. \nJoin us for a frank (and hopefully fun) conversation. Together we can prompt learning and raise awareness while taking personal responsibility for the words we use and our willingness to be open minded and empathetic towards each other. What words come to mind when you think of new terms and concepts in the public sphere? \nRegister for the free webinar here: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_grHjM17kSiykhrvgQ0GHrQ.

SUMMARY:Diversity You Cannot See: A Special Event on Neurodiversity in the Mainframe Workplace
DESCRIPTION:Did you know today an estimated 40% of people deal with autistic\, attention deficit\, anxiety\, and/or dyslexic disorders? Combined\, these mental differences account for the bulk of what sociologists refer to as “neurodiversity\,” or natural variations in everyone’s brain\, particularly those who have outlying characteristics\, such as autism. \n \nJoin us on Wednesday\, July 27\, 2022 at 9 am PT/ 12 pm ET for a special web event hosted by 30-year veteran Cynthia Coupé. Cynthia will share her experience as a neurodiversity expert and mother of an autistic daughter\, as well as industry insights and perspectives from three other neurodivergent proponents: one working professional in the tech industry\, a grad student “on the spectrum\,” and one neurodiversity staffing executive. A Q&A “town hall” session will follow at the same time on July 28. Replays will be available after each live event. Register here: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Yk-pogSRQSu17WJUZ1Khyg. \nTogether\, they’ll discuss how neurotypical people can better interact with this intelligent and unique population\, where communication breakdowns usually happen\, and what the future holds for this often misunderstood but increasingly important talent pool. They’ll also explore how societal awareness\, appreciation\, and participation with neurodivergent people can have a big impact on the way we work\, learn\, and commune with one another.  \n“Neurodiversity is the new normal\,” Coupé says. “Even though it’s less stigmatized today\, many people still don’t know how to navigate it\, even though we all interact with it regularly (whether we realize it or not). To build safe spaces where everyone can grow\, collaborate\, and work in the way that plays to our strengths\, this panel will lead the discussion on how we can better understand ourselves and each other.” \nAbout the moderator: Cynthia Coupé is a self-diagnosed neurodivergent and Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) with over 30 years working in the field of neurodiversity. She is a TEDx speaker and the co-founder and CEO of Outreach Advocacy Resources and Services (OARS)\, Inc.\, a company dedicated to transforming the lives of neurodivergent clients by using their inherent strengths to better society. With her diverse background of serving individuals in the clinical\, hospital\, home\, and school settings (including her own autistic and ADHD daughter)\, Cynthia has developed a unique perspective and aspires to be a lasting ambassador for this vulnerable but brilliant demographic. \nAbout Making Our Strong Community Stronger: Making our Strong Community Stronger is the first-ever initiative on diversity\, equity\, and inclusion in the mainframe industry. Sponsored by BMC\, Broadcom Mainframe Software\, IBM\, Open Mainframe Project\, Rocket Software\, TechChannel\, and VirtualZ Computing.  \n

SUMMARY:From Educators to End Users: Leveraging Holistic Approaches and the Importance of Belonging Across the Tech Ecosystem
DESCRIPTION:Join us on February 23 at 9 am PDT/ 12 pm EDT for the first 2022 webinar of the Making Our Strong Community\, Stronger collaborative initiative on diversity\, equity and inclusion (DEI) in the mainframe industry. Register here: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_eO5uTSRsThKcAa9M0jgq9Q. \nWe’re mixing up the conversation by sharing the perspective of IBM Z educators and end users. In keeping with our previous discussions\, we are continuing our bold\, open and honest dialog related to the experiences\, challenges\, and solutions to navigating DEI. But this time around\, we’re bringing in one new\, important factor—belonging—making our key initiative diversity\, equity\, inclusion and belonging (DEI-B). \nThroughout last year\, we discussed the importance of telling our stories and creating a climate for success for everyone. We are shifting to demystify the challenges of isolation and loneliness that can occur when programs\, training\, support and other components of the ecosystem may not provide the holistic access\, partnerships\, and opportunities that unlock real belonging and potential for people\, teams\, and companies. \nSome organizations create well-intended approaches to provide help\, however\, these noble attempts can feel like a one and done mentality\, meant to do good\, while possibly further isolating the very individuals who are meant to benefit. DEI-B is not a one-time initiative—it’s a lifetime of educating and listening to everyone in the company to improve. Organizations need to match what’s happening societally to reflect\, hear and understand everyone’s values and needs in order to progress. This is not a one-time initiative\, project or task. \nYou’ll notice that the panelists for this webinar include end users and educational professionals—and that’s no coincidence. From vendors to end users and partners that use IBM Z—there are more perspectives and personalities than you’d expect within the technology ecosystem. This breadth of perspectives makes it more important than ever to build\, support and maintain holistic\, effective approaches that will make the ecosystem stronger working for everyone. \nPanelists include: \n\nDr. Gina Bullock\, Assistant Professor\, North Carolina A&T State University\nChinedu Ibeh\, Corporate Vice President\, Enterprise Compute Services\, New York Life\nByron Smith\, Senior Mainframe Security Engineer\, Systems Technology Banking Officer\, M&T Bank\nNicole Nwakalor\, Specialist\, Systems Engineering\, Infrastructure\, Operations and Cloud\, Charles Schwab\nModerator: Dr. Gloria Chance\, president and CEO\, Mousai Group\n\nWe are also pleased to host a unique event after the webinar for attendees only: Dr. Gloria Chance\, our webinar moderator\, will hold a private Town Hall for attendees to join the conversation\, bringing their own experiences and questions into this growing DEI-B community. \nSponsored by Broadcom Mainframe Software\, IBM\, Open Mainframe Project\, Rocket Software\, TechChannel and VirtualZ Computing.

SUMMARY:I am a Mainframer: Personal Stories and Lessons from the Next Generation of Mainframe Developers
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, August 18 at 8-9 am PDT for a new webinar that explores “Personal Stories and lessons from the next generation of mainframe Developers.” \nFive open source mainframe developers will share their personal journey into the mainframe\, covering what they’re working on\, the challenges and issues (good and bad) and their experiences with customers\, the open source community\, and more.  \nOne of the challenges of open source and projects like Zowe is how it can reinvent a 60 year old computing platform for the next generation of developers and system programmers and architects at tomorrow’s IT companies.  \nThis webinar will shine the light on four key Open Mainframe community members who are playing their part and open the lid on their successes\, failures\, and questions and answers for the secret sauce that is powering Zowe and other Open Mainframe Projects they are involved with. SUMMARY:Unmasking Our 'Whole Self': Can We Create Inclusive Psychologically Safe Spaces in the Workplace?’ Webinar
DESCRIPTION:In the third webinar installation of the Making Our Strong Community\, Stronger collaborative initiative on diversity\, equity and inclusion\, ‘Unmasking Our ‘Whole Self’: Can We Create Inclusive Psychologically Safe Spaces in the Workplace?’ we look at how the pressures of the pandemic have heightened racial\, gender and additional inequalities. \nRegister for the July 28 webinar at 9 am PDT/12 pm EDT here: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_9lBJWkNzSpChfbUQoa8n3w.  \nWork/life integration is the modern equivalent of work/life balance\, and inherent in this is the idea that your “whole self” is welcome at work. As the last many months demonstrated\, there is less separation between work and personal lives than we originally thought. But this idea of work/life integration and its influence on corporate inclusion plays out differently for different people\, when being your “whole self” is a privilege—while some may be comfortable being their genuine “whole self” at work\, others (especially those from more diverse populations) still feel a need to wear a mask based on how they are expected to behave but not who they really are. How can we create psychologically safe spaces where all employees feel comfortable bringing their “whole selves” or more of themselves to work? Panelists for this webinar include: \n\nAllyson B. Cook\, Program Lead\, Customer Engagement Programs\, Broadcom\nEarl Dixon Jr.\, Principal Client Services\, Vitality Program Tech Lead\, Broadcom\nKevin Norlin\, Chief Revenue Officer\, Rocket Software\nTina Tarquinio\, Product Management Director for IBM Z\, IBM\n\nWe are also pleased to host a unique event after the webinar for attendees only: Dr. Gloria Chance\, our webinar moderator and President/CEO of The Mousai Group\, will hold a private Town Hall on July 29 at 9-10 am PDT for attendees to join the conversation\, bringing their own experiences and questions into this growing DE&I community. \nThe Making Our Strong Community\, Stronger collaborative initiative is sponsored by Broadcom Mainframe Software\, IBM\, Open Mainframe Project\, Rocket Software\, TechChannel and VirtualZ Computing.
